IMPROBABLE FICTION
This play is a lesser known Alan Ayckbourn comedy, but never the less, it is a very funny play and was very appropriate for the company. Congratulations to Jill Roper on her directional vision and all the actors put into practice what she had told them to do.
All the characters were very well played and there wasn’t a weak link in the team. We were introduced to the characters attending a meeting of would be authors, all who had their own specialist subject - that is a thriller writer, a science fiction writer, and a romantic novelist to name but three. This was a meeting to discuss how each of the authors were getting on with their potential novels and, after much discussion and argument, there wasn’t very much being written by any of them at all and all there talk and argument was pure bluster. This meeting took over the whole of a very funny first act with very little useful information being discussed. The second act descended into total anarchy, although still very funny, with the characters seemingly playing roles from their potential novels and trying to prove they could be best selling authors. There were numerous costume changes in Act 2 by all the characters and well done to all of them because there was certainly no breaks in the plot due to changes. Congratulations to all the cast without exception - I know how hard they must have worked.
All costumes were of period whether modern or trying to play out their specific characters. Very well done to the costume team. The set was simple - just a number of chairs set out for the meeting in a village hall for example. The cast had plenty of room to manoeuvre and it was much better than using the rather small stage at the Kirkgate. Lighting and sound was good, well done to the techies.
It was a very enjoyable evening and the full house audience thouroughly enjoyed the performance, even though it was rather different to any other two act comedy. Very very well done to everyone involved in the production.
