This little known play by Neil Simon once again shows his expertise at writing comedy with serious undertones. The script is witty, and fast moving even though there are just three characters to engender the pace. When a feisty young woman arrives at the home of Hollywood script writer Herb, it takes him some time to come to terms with the fact that she is his daughter, just arrived from New York and determined to 'make it' as a film star. The play looks in depth at the emotions and aspirations of both the father/daughter relationship and Herb's relationship with his secretary/lover. An outstanding performance by Juliet Ibberson as Libby, showing great understanding of her role, set the stage alight. As her laid back, losing his writing grip and unwilling to commit himself father, John Castell proved an admirable Herb. In a smaller but vital role Jan Ibberson gave Steffy the right amount of understanding and eventually the backbone to ensure both Herb and Libby faced the future with their eyes opened and their feet more firmly on the ground. All three plus the Director to be complemented on an excellent piece of theatre.
