I Love you, You’re Perfect, Now Change, by Joe Dipietro and Jimmy Roberts is the first musical produced by Chorley Amateur Dramatic & Operatic Society (CADOS) since ‘Rent’ in 2009. It is a modern musical revue, which relies on observational comedy about real life human relationships, from the first date to the loss of a partner.
Vicki Forrester, Sam Hilton, Gaz Jenkins and Michael Cosgrove gave excellent performances playing over 40 different characters between them. Their American accents were very good and their diction was clear, which although important in any production was even more important in this show as I would imagine the narrative of this musical was unknown to a majority of the audience. All four actors were able to furnish their characters with well-timed comedy, sadness and sensitivity when needed, providing the audience with both laughter and feelings of sympathy and empathy for each character portrayed. All four performers had commendable singing voices that were very easy to listen to and it was nice to hear the harmonies. They were ably accompanied by a trio of musicians, piano played by Pete Faint, Violin David Storey, Bass Mike Ciaputa and the Musical director was Wayne Oakes. The Choreographers were Hannah Liddle and Libby Burke.
I did feel the lighting cues were a little slow sometimes which meant the performers were speaking or singing in the dark on a few occasions. However this did not appear to distract the performers or detract from the enjoyment of the audience. I would like to congratulate all the backstage crew lead by Stage Manager Siobhan Edge, especially on their proficient and unobtrusive changing of props and costumes as there were some quick changes for both of these roles.
I had heard allot about this musical from various people and was looking forward to seeing this production. I was certainly not disappointed. Well done to Director Paul Carr for a very enjoyable show.
