It is usual for a Theatre Company like Tynemouth Priory Theatre to ‘pull out all of the stops’ for their panto; one of the productions which, like so many other groups, ensures its financial future. As usual, they did so in droves with this excellent show; from the impressive light show before the first curtain to the last wave of the cast at the final one.
Their fabulous production in their own theatre was laced with all of the theatrical 'wonders' you would expect; a sumptuous set of beautiful scenic backdrops, lovely colourful costumes, a strong line-up of experienced principals, strong and apt choreography and dancing, superb music and singing by all, comedy, drama, and some gorgeous lighting and sound effects which director Beccy Gilmore and MD Susie Jones can be super proud of.
This show had many scene changes, 18 in all, which in some productions has its audiences waiting in the dark… and waiting… not this one !. Congratulations Phil Emmerson and his crew for slick changes which allowed the action to flow without a pause. This added to the interest, enjoyment and involvement of us all.
The principal cast were excellent and acted and reacted to one-another very well. The baddie – HEMLOCK, superbly played by Rachel Hardy was easily boo-able and was nicely supported by her henchman SLIME – David Cooper. A strong PRINCESS JENNY – beautifully sung by Erin Kerr provided one half of the love interest. The other by Lizzie Lerpiniere as HUMPTY DUMPTY, arriving mysteriously from his ‘shell’ to treat us all to a lovely story.
FLASH – Alex Hepple and DAME MABEL – Laurence Hill provided the comedy extremely well and showed their experience in their roles. Ably supported by SAM and ELLA the hapless court guards, nicely played and sung by Lyndsey Spark and Brooke Milburn.
Fraire Armstrong – as canny and sparkly HARBOUR FAIRY, our QUEEN – Anne Hogg and Phil Emmerson as the LANDLORD and unfortunate POLICEMAN completed the strong supporting cast.
We were treated to wonderful dancing and choreography by Vivienne Greener and her group – STAGES School of Dance. With special mention to NAIA and AQUA – Laila McKale and Roxy Jones. Well done!. The chorus also excelled in their singing and movement and were fully involved throughout.
The family connection running throughout this whole production cannot be overlooked with Director Beccy, husband Andy and their son Thomas backstage, the musical family Jones (who appeared in the pit this year with proud Mum Susie), the lighting team Matthew and Tony Hall with assistance from Richard Hay, all to be super proud of. Keep it up, you guys.
This panto was superb and contained all of the ingredients of a wonderful family show; as attested by the audience’s reaction at the finale. A great night’s entertainment. Thanks for the invitation, Pauleen and I enjoyed our visit.
