I certainly didn’t know what to expect as I entered The Gatehouse Theatre in Stafford to watch a performance of “How to Succeed in business Without Really Trying” by Stafford Operatic Society. I knew very little about the show and had only heard a few snippets of the music. However, I was pleasantly surprised and had a very enjoyable evening.

The show itself would benefit from a little stream lining and also perhaps a change of title but the cast in this production did a tremendous job. Sam Parton led the cast well and really suited the devious yet outwardly innocent Finch. Hannah Morris, as Rosemary, did a lovely job with some quite uninspiring songs and the supporting cameo roles brought a great touch of humour and life to the show. I have to single out Will Wood, however, who played Bud Frump. Perfect for the role! Characterisation, both physically and vocally, was spot on, well done!

The set was simple but worked well and I loved the use of the elevator doors. The different levels and areas proved effective and the costumes and hairstyles gave the right hint of the era the show was set in. The ensemble obviously enjoyed being in this show and were having a lot of fun. Even when things went wrong (a toppling desk and a mirror smashed) they carried on with a hint of a smile.  The show was well choreographed and the humour throughout made it very watchable.

Well done Stafford on another successful show.
