This was my first time watching the Hot Mikado, although I was aware of the different version of this traditional Gilbert and Sullivan classic. I was really interested to see how Erewash would put their mark on the performance and make it their own and I wasn’t disappointed.
Nanki Poo was brought to life by Hayden Fletcher, a talented actor with the ability to keep the story moving, which he did well, as he took us on a lovely romantic journey. Nicola Tuxford as Yum Yum was the other half of this romantic duo. Nicola has a lovely voice that was suited to the role and was great as a soloist or when singing in harmony with others.
Pitti Sing was played by Grace Deakin, it is great to see another generation of a thespian family delivering a really solid performance. She has a great voice and clearly one to watch in the future. Hayley Wood played Peep-Bo, with a lovely tone to her voice which completed the three maids and they produced magical harmonies when singing together as a trio.
John Fletcher took the title role of The Mikado with style and delivered a humorous, and disciplined performance. Louise O'Boyle as Katisha gave a deliciously ruthless yet honest performance, I enjoyed how she developed the role throughout the show.
Phil Deakin played Ko-Ko, the most dubious Lord High Executioner. I have had the pleasure of knowing Phil for many years and he always delivers to a high level. His performance was clear and concise and made me chuckle to myself.
Evan Hagan delivered a strong performance as Pish-Tush. Richard Dawson as Pooh Bah, is the role that we learn has many hats. I loved the way he moved through all the roles and engaged with the audience throughout.
All the Gentlemen and Ladies of Japan added to this dynamic performance adding charisma and an abundance of colour with their stunning costumes.
Sound was all crystal clear thanks to Dave Dallard and Jack Clark and the lighting further enhanced the show provided by Steve Greatorex.
The set design was well thought out with the set showing off the on-stage six-piece band really well, well done to Mark and Bill Robbins. The band sounded great and interacted well with the cast.
Huge congratulation to the production team, Director James Bowden and Co Musical Director with Martin Lewis and Choreographer Ann Colgan for providing an exciting colourful, musical journey.
I look forward to watching your next production of Evita in March next year.
