Set in the duck yard, Drake (played by David Cameron) and his partner duck Ida (Megan Pattie) have a clutch of eggs about to hatch – but one egg, much larger than the others, is the last to break open.   When it does, there emerges a rather ugly chick much larger than the others and which cannot quack but honks instead and is promptly named Ugly (played by Kacy McWilliam). Because his siblings Billy (Abby Bone), Beaky (Eva Miller), Downey (Carys Kelly) Fluff (Ailani McMahon) and Webby (Abigail Coyne) and the other ducks on the pond make fun of him, Ugly feels shunned and falls prey to the villain of the piece Tom Cat (Fraser Robertson) who somewhat sinisterly, invites him home “for dinner”. Ugly escapes but is quite lost and so begin his adventures where he meets such characters as Greylag (Ben McGuire), a goose with a glittering military career; Grace (Sarah Carruthers), a distinguished duck; Queenie (Sarah Smillie), a domesticated cat; and in particular, a beautiful young Swan (Eilidh McCartney), who is his ultimate salvation when he realises he is a Swan.
A large cast of well chosen principals supported by Members of the Goose Squadron and duck yard residents, geese, dancers and froglets completed the line-up of a very entertaining, humourous and well produced show.   The musical score is excellent and MD Andrew made the most of it and in all, the show stands as a great credit to the youth theatre.
