As always with Chesil Theatre I was warmly welcomed by their front of house team and took my place in this small and intimate auditorium and looked forward to a good evening's entertainment. As ever with this hugely talented theatre group I was not to be disappointed. The open set that greeted us was the interior of a 1950's abode with the period kitchen to stage right and the lounge to the left and assorted paintings that hung on the wall all perfectly depicting the era. It's quite clear that a lot of thought by Peter Lilliard and his team had gone into this along with, I should imagain, a lot of effort in sourcing the props etc. A fantastic set. This was hugely complimented by some subtle yet inventive lighting that led to creating a very visual and pleasing set. Equally the costumes were very in keeping with the 1950's period and fitted in perfectly.
The play itself, a dark comedy is based around Judy who loves to live a true 1950's lifestyle where the housewife does everything for her husband, rubs the bath, makes his lunch box, waves him goodbye from the door, has his cocktail and slippers ready when he returns. It turnes out that this is infact now, this is how she chooses to live. It truly explores the relationship within a marriage and the relationship between man and woman. All is well until a promotion is in the offing and the new boss turns up for a cocktail party.
The cast was brilliantly led by Jo Conyngham as Judy and Marcus Whitfield who played the Husband, Jonny both of whom were admiralby backed up by the remaining cast of Nicky Hubbard, Alison Georgiou, Stephanie Snuggs and Steve Clark. The rehearsal period and efforts by Heather Bradford as director was spot on. The diction was clear and precise with no evidence of any dropped lines, movement, confident and each member of the cast looked at ease with their individual roles. Time well spent I feel.
Overall this was a very well produced, directed and delivered play and of the usual very high standard that one has come to look forward to seeing at Chesil Theatre. Well done and congratulations to all.
