Holiday Snap is the funniest play I have seen in a very long time, and I have seen some excellent comedies at the West Walls theatre.
The play is set in a time share apartment in Portugal, which is managed by Commander Chittenden, brilliantly played by John Metcalfe. It is an hilarious tale of infidelity and misunderstanding, in that the same week is booked in July by two couples playing away from their partners, but acting as married pairs.
Every member of the cast gave very convincing performances. Caroline Robertson was absolutely outstanding as Eve, a scatty blonde, who was rather partial to a bit on the side. She was well supported by Larry Lomas, playing Eve’s holiday crush Leslie, and calling themselves the Smith family They arrive at the apartment to be greeted by Chitto, who thinks they are the Charlesworth family. The Commander is rather partial to a tipple of gin, and as the play progresses he gets rather worse for wear, which makes for many comical situations. While the Smiths are sorting out their bedroom we are introduced to the Charlesworth family, again a couple having a week away from their spouses at home. The parts were extremely well played, Henry by Keith Teasdale and Mary by Shona Broome, and this is where the apartment double booking comes in. Both couples have booked the second week in July. The following scenes between the Smiths and the Charlesworths, and Chitto are hilarious, and sadly are far too many to mention here.
The crazy situations are compounded by the arrival of Henry’s Mother in Law Celia, and his attempt to keep his holiday romance under wraps from her. The comings and goings, and the falsehoods and intrigue made brilliant comedy theatre, and all the time during the coming and goings of the couples, Chitto was getting more inebriated , well done John, what a performance. Other parts were well played by Bob Cuthbertson as Perky and Janice Nixon as Kit, Henry’s wife!!!!. I apologise to Bob and Janice for not giving them a bigger plug, but I could have written reams of words about this play, but I am supposed to limit a review to just one page or maybe two, and I could have written a whole book about this brilliant play and its performers. Thank you for a brilliant evenings entertainment.
