High Society, immortalised by the film featuring such great performers Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly, Satchmo and now in Clent. With music and lyrics by Cole Porter how could it fail to entertain? A refurbished theatre and hired tiered seating provided audiences with a much more comfortable and better view of the stage. A strong principal line up was well directed and produced a joyful performance which was much appreciated by the full house and conveyed to the performers by sustained applause at the finale. Tracy (Elizabeth Bridgeland) was new to me and has a delightful voice and stage presence and good looks. Her ex-husband Dexter (Ollie Edwards) was excellent if a little young for the role and new husband to be George (Simon Hartley), was a forceful suitor who was bound to lose out in the end. Mother Lord (Lynne Edwards) and Tracy’s young sister Dinah (Mary Core) were both excellent and Liz (Kim Topham) almost stole the show with ‘He’s A Right Guy’ and her humorously cynical performance as a newspaper photographer. Mike (Simon Wilkinson) a news reporter and Seth (Adam Bridgeland), Trace’s mostly missing father were also well cast. Roger Trigg, in the plum role of permanently inebriated (Uncle Willie) was superb. The show was well dressed and Lighting, Sound and Sets were in keeping with the whole show. MD James Bradbury, Choreographer Sadie Turner and Show Director Denise Jefferson can be well pleased with the result. A lovely evening all round. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole performance.
