This latest production by Gateshead A.O.D.S provided a great evening’s entertainment for an appreciative audience. Like all Societies struggling to attract audiences, it was only a pity that there were not more in attendance to witness this fine show.
Based on the Philadelphia Story, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter, the Society brought to life the complicated and intertwined relationships of the wealthy socialites of America in the 1950s. Everyone is familiar with the works of Cole Porter, and all have an opinion on how they should be staged and performed. You therefore not only need a strong principal line-up and supporting cast to deliver his clever and intricate music and lyrics, but a Musical Director with the ability to bring out their nuances.
Gateshead has such a Musical Director in the form of Ross Norman, who controlled the Orchestra, Principals, and Chorus alike to near perfection. What’s so special about him you might ask? Well he is only 18 and is the Society’s youngest Musical Director in its 110 year history. It takes some courage to put your faith in the hands of such raw talent, but it was certainly well placed, and the results were there for all to see. Under the guidance and direction of Ann Chadwick, the Principal line up was as strong as ever. Solid performances were again delivered by Lawrence Chadwick (Dexter Haven), Amy Bagnell (Tracy Lord), James Forster (Mike Connor), and Bernadette Trotter (Liz Imbrie). With these four in a line-up you have the building blocks for a fine show.
Add to the mix the vastly experienced Jim Cowper (Uncle Willie), Mike Beckford (George Kitteridge), Carol Bannerman (Mother Lord), and Keith Hewitson (Seth), who all brought their own unique qualities to their roles, then you are on a winner. To complete this eclectic line-up there was the emerging talent of Rebecca Mayer who played the role of the precocious younger sister Dinah Lord to perfection.
