A wonderful ‘50’s musical comedy with the superb music from Cole Porter so well known of course as a film with unforgettable titles as Well Did You Ever’, ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’, the title song ‘High Society’, ‘I Love You Samantha’ to name but a few. Socialite Tracy Lord is to marry somewhat of a bore George Kitteridge, when ex-husband Dexter arrives and announces that unless Tracy agrees to the wedding being reported, he will arrange for a salacious article about her father’s indiscretion with an exotic dancer to be exposed. An extremely bizarre set of events take place and in true musical comedy endings ‘True Love’ prevails. Set designer Nigel Stimson created just the right feel of opulence with a ‘posh’ parlour, stunning ballroom with pillars and simple but effective exteriors and lighting from day into night. I loved the diving board into the orchestra pit as if a pool. Annie took on this challenger as Director with Sue Wightman in charge of the baton and her ten piece pit orchestra – however sometimes I found the sound rather shrill, and difficult to hear the vocals with clarity. Choreographer Lisa put the whole cast through their paces, resulting in slick movement and interesting shapes. Together with a committed cast and production team it was as the song describes ‘delightful’. Tracy was portrayed by Victoria Tinkler who looked elegant, was eloquent and terrific when tipsy with champagne. Simon Tomlinson was a relaxed Dexter, with good pairing from Jez Druce and Jo Levett as Mike and Liz, the hacks from Spy Magazine. Robin Harrison gave a polished performance as Uncle Willie and Natasha Pope was delightful as ‘Friday night’ sister Dinah. The principals were supported by good cameo characters and ensemble work, and there was certainly a happy feeling gained from the evening’s entertainment.
