Since its release in 2006, Disney’s High School Musical has become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon, offering an insightful portrayal of American high schools, complete with cliques, stereotypical characters and the universal challenges of growing up while remaining true to oneself. The cast adeptly captured the quintessential awkwardness and exaggerated interactions typical of high school.
Rosa Marks portrayed Sharpay with notable attitude, while Aedan Mason conveyed Ryan's character with confidence. The roles of Troy and Gabriella, enacted by James Berryman and Deanna Mullen respectively, were well performed. James bought a natural naivety to Troy, I’ve not seen that side of this character before. Having seen Deanna in various roles over the years, I feel this is her most memorable to date. The role suited her personality and performance style perfectly. Joseph Burley also gave a strong, engaging performance as Chad Danforth.
Ms Darbus was represented with maturity and authority by Evie Franklin, who succeeded in portraying an adult role really effectively. Additionally, key cast members included James Henderson as Coach Bolton. One of my favourite Adults being Jackie Scott, played superbly by Ebony Jones who was pivotal in introducing the scenes by way of news bulletins and gave pace and flow to the whole production. The supporting cast, made up of The Jocks, Thespians, Brainiacs, Performing Arts Kids and Skater Dudes, all had their individual part to play, as did the other students and those playing adult roles.
The ensemble numbers were well choreographed by Amy, showcasing the talents of various individuals. Special mention from me to those in the cheerleading squad whose well-rehearsed sequences were well coordinated.
The audience experienced a nostalgic journey through familiar songs, with the cast visibly enjoying themselves, transferring their energy to the vocal audience who responded with clapping, laughter and applause throughout. I know how challenging it must have been to deliver two hours of high-energy, catchy songs. My personal highlights: “Start of Something New”, “Get’cha Head in the Game”, ”When There was Me and You” and the iconic number "We’re All In This Together” was absolutely great.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the production including, as always, the unseen team working tirelessly behind the scenes. The fantastic costumes and made-in-house scenery always sets the company apart from other youth groups and along with the multitalented cast, there was no doubt you would have yet another hit production. I understand it's been ten years since the company last undertook this demanding project and I must say the company successfully emphasised the underlying message of acceptance in a highly effective manner. Youth Onstage’s production delivered an impressive performance, completely evident from the audience reactions on the night I attended.
Thank you once again for the invitation and your hospitality. Looking forward to the concert,
