It is great to see the Minerva Juniors going from strength to strength, and their production of High School Musical gave the opportunity to showcase a wide range of talent. From the pre-show setup to the very opening of the show, it was evident that a significant amount of work had been undertaken to ensure audiences were fully entertained. As in the film, the stage musical follows the conflict between the basketball team and the drama club at East High School. Despite teenagers having their own interests, and groups of friends, the all-important message of teamwork and friendships shone through in this production. Troy Bolton played by Gary Caldwell performed with great ease with good vocals and acting. Alongside Gabriella Montez, played by Hannah Dick who was equally talented in her singing and acting, they brought their story to life, and there was a good chemistry between them throughout their performance. Ruby Kerr delivered an outstanding performance as Sharpay Evans, effectively portraying the character as a spoiled and entitled teenager with a self-centered attitude. Chloe Wilson, in the role of Ryan Evans, provided an excellent contrast to Sharpay and performed to a high standard. Ms Darbus played by Holly Morris really shone in this role, and her acting and portrayal of a rather precious drama teacher was spot on. Coach Bolton, played by Emma Scott showed her wide range of abilities on stage and had excellent stage presence. Keeping us fully entertained with excellent acting and comedy timing was Finn Morris-Ellis as Jack Scott, a role well played. Lewis Devlin, in the role of Chad Danworth, pal of Troy, and Callum Cameron as Zeke Baylor added to the energy in the production. Allie Nicolson as Taylor McKessie, Ava Telfer as Martha Cox and Macie Campbell as Kelsi Neilson brought the right level of energy to the stage. With very solid performers in the supporting roles and several rival groups, they all ensured that the show moved along well, displaying excellent teamwork in addition to everyone playing their individual characters well. The singing and vocal harmonies taught and musically directed by Sam MacDonald were excellent, and the use of backing tracks accompanying the show worked well. Choreography by Mairead Dunsmore was slick and precise. The show was extremely well directed by Eleanor MacKay, and she made appropriate and excellent use of the stage area as well as the auditorium. Some of the standout moments in the production included the way the basketball game was played with excellent catching by Coach Bolton, the auditioning scenes and the storytelling throughout the whole performance. Technically, the show ran very smoothly, and scene changes were well executed. From a welcoming front of house team to stage crew, chaperones, and cast, all should be congratulated on a great job done!
A bonus was being given the opportunity to meet the cast after the show, and along with the youth advisor, present some well-earned long service awards.
