Youth Productions are no different to the adult companies in terms of shortage of male performers, hence several of the male characters here were played by females. This however, in no way detracted from the overall successful performance.
Gabriella and Troy were well cast and gave good solid performances, offering pleasant singing voices. Sharpay made the most of her selfish self-confidence and was well paired with Ryan – her twin brother. Apologies at this point for not referencing performer names against characters – only Christian names were quoted in the programme. Strong assured performances came, too, from Ms Darbus, the eccentric drama teacher and Troy’s father Coach Bolton.
Mention must be made of the characters, Chad, Taylor and Kelsi together with Radio Announcer Jack Scott all of whom presented well in this lunchtime performance of the show.
The GAMA (Youth) chorus demonstrated a mix of different skills and abilities – not surprising taking in to account the wide mix of ages involved – but, overall, each member truly seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Choreography was well planned and rehearsed, together with good direction and first class musical direction (with the luxury of a live band too!), made for an enjoyable afternoon. A good, well lit set, and sympathetic sound operation was the icing on the cake!
Many thanks for the invite to your show, and for the hospitality received before the show and at the interval!
