After last year’s successful “Calendar Girls”, the society, once again, turned their thoughts to presenting another stage play. This time, the choice was the well known, and well loved, TV Maplin Holiday Camp comedy. The cast rose to the occasion and brought us all the loveable characters that we came to enjoy in the TV series. Leading the comedy stakes and, looking her spitting image complete with a fab Welsh accent, was Vicki Bowman, playing the “man-mad” head Yellowcoat, Gladys Pugh, who has her sights on the holiday camp director, Jeffrey Fairbrother, excellently played by Alan Christison in a fine dithering and hesitant manner. The scene after he has too much to drink was particularly funny. Then there were the camp’s “toffs” – snobbish ballroom dancers Barrie and Yvonne (Keith Spottiswoode and Carey Normand) brilliantly adding to the fun with their barbed sense of humour! The camp’s two comedians were in the safe hands of Ged Ryan as earthy Ted Bovis and Gary Jordan as the sensible level-headed Spike. Sinclair Ross was the Punch and Judy man who hates children and his explanation for hitting a youngster was delightfully amusing, and ex-horse jockey Fred (Rod Cameron) opinionated his tuppence worth. Of course, everybody loved madcap Peggy, the chalet maid, (Eileen Christison) as she strived to achieve become a Yellowcoat. Smart work came from other Yellowcoats and supporting cast.
