Hickory Dickory and the Super Bug - Whilst the earliest recorded version of the nursery rhyme was published in 1744 this modern pantomime script so ably created by Jim Sperinck in 1998 really brings the story up to date. Whilst the pantomime retains all the elements of a traditional pantomime the characters reflect not only the age of the clock but also the computer age. From Fairy Sundial to Dame Megabite through Green Witch Meantime to Virus and Seedy Rom the writer does not forget Tick and Tock. New Year celebrations in Old King Cole’s Nurseryland are interrupted by evil Green Witch Meantime. She gets Super Bug, Virus, (who lives on Silicon chips) and his partner, Seedy Rom, to help her stop the clocks by kidnapping Tick and Tock, the assistants to Hickory, the Royal Timekeeper. Can the New Year ever get under way?
This panto with its references to computers gave Silchester players the opportunity to present an evening of great fun for youngsters of all ages. The pace was slick, the songs well sung, the costumes original and the sets created the exciting atmosphere in the various corners of nurseryland. The inspired casting gave opportunities for both new and established members of all ages. The singing was of a high standard and the diction first-class – no need for microphones here. The sets were very well executed with some unusual props - in particular the exploding clock caused great interest amongst the audience. Everyone involved in the production is to be congratulated on a first-class production giving the audience a most enjoyable evening.
