On Friday evening, the Sunderland Empire was aglow with the vibrancy and excitement befitting a 30-year celebration as Centre Stage North East (CSNE) presented “Hey There Broadway.” This exceptional concert marked three decades of theatrical achievement, community, and passion. Under the assured direction and musical direction of Fiona Clegg, with a creative consortium of choreographers and a huge cast comprised of legacy and present members, the event proved to be a gala testament to the enduring heritage and evolving talent of this beloved company. I would have loved to have been up there again with you all myself, also being a legacy member of CSNE.

It was clear from the outset that this was to be more than a concert—it was a homecoming, a tribute, and a showcase interlaced with nostalgia and promise. Dispersed within incredible musical numbers showcasing the talent within CSNE was multiple celebrity messages of support for the company which were really special, expertly edited and collated by Nathan Clegg.

Fiona Clegg’s dual role as Director and Musical Director cannot be overstated. Her keen understanding of both the emotional arc and technical demands of musical theatre shone brightly throughout the evening. The vocal arrangements were meticulously tailored to the strengths of each performer, and the balance between orchestration and vocals demonstrated a fine ear for the subtleties of the performances, including multiple performances as a soloist from Fiona herself.

The evening’s choreography, delivered by a team of varied and talented choreographers, was nothing short of spectacular. Each routine was distinct, reflecting the diverse styles and eras of Broadway itself. From the infectious sequences of “Too Darn Hot” by Ethan Luke to the sultry grit of “Wilkomen by Abigail Mahoney,” the movement was inventive, precise, and always alive with purpose. Group numbers were especially effective, showcasing the ensemble’s unity and energy. Notably, the choreography never overshadowed the storytelling.

The cast, comprising Centre Stage North East members past and present, delivered performances marked by versatility and conviction. It was an inspired decision to reunite alumni with current members, offering a rare richness in experience and style. The concert’s programme was a joyous journey through Broadway’s greatest hits, thoughtfully curated to provide variety and surprise. I especially enjoyed solo performances from Liam Olesson, Grace Carter, Ethan Luke, Katie Ball, Michael Simpson, Lily McGee and Jess Green and I was utterly delighted to see the beautiful Rachael Amundsen, Rachael Tomlinson, Anne Malpass and Emma Elliott on stage again (sorry to anyone I missed!).

Lighting and sound were engineered to professional standards, enhancing but never distracting from the onstage action, well done to Tyne Audio for their as ever professional support to the company. Costuming provided visual variety and flair, with nods to iconic Broadway styles—sequins, tailcoats, and statement pieces abounded, all contributing to the spectacle without overwhelming it.

Centre Stage North East has, over its thirty years, fostered a spirit of inclusion, artistic excellence, and personal growth. “Hey There Broadway” celebrated not only the achievements of the company but the friendships, opportunities, and passion for performance that have defined its journey. The decision to feature members from different eras highlighted the continuity and evolution of talent, showing how the company’s ethos endures and adapts. The standing ovation at the evening’s close was richly deserved and spoke to the company’s impact over thirty years.

Centre Stage North East continues to be a vital, creative force, and “Hey There Broadway” was a glorious affirmation of its artistry and heart. Here is to the next thirty years!
