“Heroes” by Gerald Sibleyras translated by Tom Stoppard in 2005 needs three talented male actors to perform this excellent piece and Fylde Coast Players have been fortunate to obtain the services of three of the best. The action takes place in France on the terrace of a sanatorium for World War 0ne veterans. The simple but so effective set together with appropriate lighting was the ideal accompaniment for some fine performances. The gentle sound of birdsong throughout, helped to create the correct atmosphere. We soon realised that this was a subtle comedy and as the characters developed we began to understand how the Great War had affected each individual and brought them together. Jeff Redfern as “Gustave” an aristocratic agoraphobic hits on the idea of leaving the safety of his surroundings to lead an expedition to the distant poplar trees, an escape from the constant daily routine. Jeff brings out all the nuances of the character trying to overcome his obvious fears. Andy Cooke as “Philippe” is a man terrified that the nun in charge of the sanatorium is out to kill him and confides all his fears to his two companions who take him under their wings to allay his paranoia. Peter Hoyle as “Henri” appears to have the least reason to be incarcerated with the other patients having just a gammy leg. He is constantly frustrated by the various foibles of his companions but feels the need to help wherever he can. All these roles are beautifully written and these three actors have the experience and talent to see and perform exactly what the author intended. Director Heather Cartmell must have enjoyed the opportunity of working with them. She has brought out all the comedy and pathos from the characters and she has another well earned success to her credit. Thank you for a very special night at the theatre.
