Hello, Dolly! is a classic fun-filled musical set in the 1890’s in New York City, based on Thorton Wilders ‘The Matchmaker’, which is just what the widowed Dolly Gallagher Levi is. Leah Smith was in complete control in the very demanding role as the enchanting, self-assertive widowed socialite turned matchmaker Dolly, dominating the stage with fine acting and singing. Equally capable was Iain Usher, with a commanding characterisation of Horace Vandergelder, while Daniel Inglis-McDonald and Murray Keir provided a superb partnership as Vandergelder’s employees Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker. Great performances were provided by Maria Antelmi as the fun loving Hat Shop owner Irene Molloy aided and abetted by Jessica Kerr as her naïve, straight laced assistant Minnie Fay who provided great comedic drama with Cornelius and Barnaby in the shop scene with Vandergelder. Niamh Condron and Jamie Porter cleverly portrayed the parts of Ermengarde and Ambrose, with Carol Mclaughlan perfectly cast as the good time girl Ernastina. John Munro made a fine Rudy as Maitre’d in the Harmonia Gardens. Indeed, every character was played with skill and enthusiasm supported by a very talented and supporting ensemble. In an evening of numerous highlights, mention must be made of the Waiters’ Gallop where the choreography was excellent and played to the strengths of the cast, as well as Dolly’s entrance at the Harmonia Gardens and the drama which followed. The production was beautifully costumed and the set was creatively designed by Director, Craig Inglis-McDonald which incorporated the partially hidden orchestra which accompanied the production so well throughout. The comedic drama, creative choreography and singing of Jerry Hernam’s great well-known musical numbers had flair and polish. The finale came too soon but left the audience showing their sincere appreciation. Congratulations to all involved.
