To the delight of the local audience, a revitalized Largs AOS staged one of the brightest and most popular of the Hollywood musicals with a return to “Hello, Dolly!” with its carefree and comedy plot, tuneful music and beautiful costumes. Past President of the Society Janine Millward carried all before her in the title role of Dolly as she swept through each scene doling out advice and business cards with John McKenzie in the role of Horace never quite catching up with her. In the sub-plot, Andy Park and Matthew Wilkin as Cornelius and Barnaby made the most of the clever comedy written into their parts with Ruth Donaldson as Mrs Irene Molloy and Morag Robertson as Minnie Fay aiding and abetting them throughout. Lynn McCabe took the role of the dreadful Ernestina costing Horace a fortune at the Harmonia Gardens and James Fox and Laura Newton the parts of Ambrose and Ermengarde, Dolly’s nominees for the dance contest at the Gardens.
The show had many highlights but notably the antics of Cornelius and Barnaby in the first Act as they bid to escape from being seen by Horace as he arrives at Mrs Molloy’s hat shop and the hilariously contrived scene in Act 2 when the wallets of Horace and Cornelius are somehow exchanged. Bob Randall played a dignified Rudolph, the Head Waiter at the Gardens and the Waiters Galop and Dolly’s entrance down the staircase was, of course, one of the essential highlights of the show. The music under the baton of David Edwards and his eight musicians proceeded apace throughout the show adding to the enjoyment of the performance.
