Some years after his daughter Julia’s death from a drug overdose, her father Joe still struggles to understand what happened to make his nineteen-year-old daughter, a musical genius, take her own life. Joe has preserved the attic bedroom where she died, but mysterious things have been happening in and around the bedroom and Joe is in the remainder of the building he has turned into the Julia Lukin Music Centre, convinced that Julia is trying to contact him. Joe has never fully come to terms with Julia’s death. Was it suicide? Was someone with Julia that night? Why would a girl genius want to take her own life? Joe arranges a meeting in the bedroom with a Psychic, and Julia’s former boyfriend. He is searching for answers and is hoping this meeting will help him find them. The three men meet, and the story of Julia’s life and death is gradually revealed. Will Joe find the answers he is looking for, or are some questions better left unanswered?
David Stone played Joe Lukin, Julia’s father, with her former boyfriend Andy Rollinson played by Alan Groucott and psychic Ken Chase played by Ian Eaton. Each of the three actors playing their part to the full. There were some long sections of dialogue from each of the players and not a word forgotten. The three actors worked well together on the wonderful set created by the set design team at Sutton Arts which created a great atmosphere. Even though we did not see her, only heard her, Leah Fennell as the voice of Julia also came across well and had a really haunting voice. I especially enjoyed the ending when pictures moved and books flew off the bookshelf.
Claire Armstrong-Mills really went to town on this production and created the right feeling for this play, ideal for Halloween.
Congratulations to everyone involved.
