Possibly First Night nerves were responsible for a number of prompts being needed. Inevitably these slowed down the action. This John Godber play shows young John's extended family through his eyes. All had their particular traits from his grandparents and parents to his aunts and cousin. John, played as a young boy by Alex Norman and by Ross Stephenson as he was growing up, allowed the audience to see his hidden fears and ambitions. All these characters maintained their respective personae throughout. In particular I commend Ross for his portrayal was quite remarkable. The set of the family's sitting room was in keeping with their working class background. The furnishings were most suitable as were the costumes. Ths lighting was used to great advantage as a highlighting medium. The sound effects were realistic but at one time were over-loud so the actors could scarcely be heard. By and large this was a most interesting and enjoyable play.
