If Shakespeare is performed well there is nothing better. I am so glad I was invited to Kirkham Grammar School’s  “Hamlet” because this was excellent. Jane Barrie, has directed an innovative production of this iconic masterpiece. Jane will be the first to acknowledge that she has some very talented actors with whom to work and it must be very satisfying to see her students provide such an entertaining evening. I was surprised to discover that the production lasted two and three quarter hours but my concentration never wavered, such was the entertainment provided. The minimal sets were perfectly adequate and together with lighting and other technical effects they ensured that actors had the correct ambience in which to perform. I was impressed with the video screen giving a précis of the plot for those not familiar with Shakespeare. Back stage crew are rarely considered important by an audience but they are so vital to the success of a production. Well done.

Zac Crowe and Sophie Warden, provided some imaginative choreography and also performed well themselves, whilst the younger dancers excelled in the scenes in which they were involved. Modern costumes looked good with muted greys and taupes reflecting the mood of the piece. Music was provided by talented musicians, including lead vocalists, all of whom added to the drama and atmosphere.

There was some great natural talent on stage with some outstanding performances and apart from some lack of projection and rushed dialogue in places, I really enjoyed the various characters. Mason Forrest as Hamlet understood the character so well and was able to show every facet of this very complex character whilst Claudius his uncle played by Anthony Hudson was superb in his role as villain of the piece. He was never out of character and we could hear every word of his dialogue. He used the stage so well and was a very believable character. His wife Gertrude, Sophie Coplestone and Elyissia Cockshott. Ophelia were ideal in their roles. Elyissia’s mad scene was something to behold.

This was another great success for Kirkham Grammar School and Jane Barrie is to be congratulated on using her obvious expertise in harnessing the talents of those in her charge to provide yet another outstanding evening of theatre. Thank you on behalf of my wife and myself for the warm welcome and hospitality.
