Set in Baltimore in 1962, the story is set around the rather plump but zestful and ambitious Tracy Turnblad (Lyndsay Cook), ever pushed on by her mother Edna - played in drag by Dale Parker. Tracy’s ambition is to audition for and appear in the Corny Collins Show which she does after gaining the consent of her father. Geddes Clark took the role of the aptly named Corny Collins with Anne Hainey cast as the scheming Velma von Tussle, Producer of the teenage show and mother of the somewhat untalented Amber von Tussle (Erin Galloway). Alistair Dempster was well cast as the teenagers’ heartthrob Link Larsen. Kirsty Langfield took the role of Motormouth Maybelle, the owner of a downtown record store and a host on the Corny Collins Show and the delightful part of Little Inez was played by Zoe McChesnie. Craig Gilchrist took the role of Maybelle’s son, dancer Seaweed J Stubbs. Dempster Slimmon as Tracy’s rather eccentric father Wilbur came over well as did Philip Doole as the sponsor Harriman F Spritzer.
This show was a bold choice for CAMPS with its fast-moving action and American accents to master and maintain throughout the plotting and counter-plotting of the story. The cast includes remaining principals too numerous to include in this report and featured groups such as The Corney Collins Dancers, the Council Members and the Dynamites Trio and their ensemble. The show was most certainly a credit to the production team and the band – and of course, the whole Company.
