~~'Hairspray' is perhaps one of the most spirited energetic musicals of recent times bringing together issues around tolerance, integration and acceptance of others and from the first moment in this production when Tracy beckons Good Morning to Baltimore, the audience became completely hooked. Monica Jamieson was the perfect choice as the bubbly Tracy Turnblad who provided an impressive and flawless performance throughout. In undergoing the amazing transformation to become Tracy’s mother, Hugh Preston made a fine Edna opposite to Gerry Jamieson as the gentle but rather goofy husband Wilbur, who together brought out the comedy and loveable balance in ’You’re Timeless to Me’. Elaine Mitchell and Nik McEwan provided polished performances as the obnoxious mother and over confident daughter, Velma and Amber Von Tussle. Jamie Montague was excellent as the self assured T.V. host, Corny Collins as was Derrick Pearce, the charismatic teenage heart throb, Link Larkin. Sarah MacLean made a first class dorky but adorable supportive Penny Pingleton , as did Isobel James as her over protective and close-minded mother, Prudy. Eileen Clifford excelled as Motormouth Maybelle and brought the house down with her rendition of ‘I Know Where I’ve Been’ which fell perfectly within her vocal range. Choreography was slick and sharp and the singing from the entire company was of the highest standard proving that ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’! A superb cast, great fun and an excellent evening’s entertainment!
