Blackpool and Fylde Light Opera Company have been successful in obtaining the rights to premiere “ Hairspray the Musical”in its adult form.. It was very encouraging to hear that this company has played to full houses for the whole of the run. The show obviously appeals to all ages many of the audience joining in some of the songs. It was a challenging show to attempt but credit must go to the Production team and all the cast and crew for a fast moving, dynamic, colourful and exhilarating production.

There were some very strong performances from all the main characters. Howard Raw’s  Edna Turnblad, was an excellent characterisation  showing his obvious experience and stage presence. Jenny Daniels as Tracy Turnblad was exceptional. Her acting, singing and dancing were of a very high standard in this iconic role. Her control and  light and shade, made this a memorable performance. Congratulations to Sophie Coulon as Penny Lou Pingleton for a quirky, comic, spirited role where she used all her dancing and dramatic skills. I have seen Derek Winward in many  roles over the years and this must rate as one of his most outstanding. He looked perfectly at home as Wilbur Turnblat, showing his consummate skills. His duet with Howard Raw was one of the highlights of the evening. Jack Wealthall gave a powerful performance as Link Larkin. He was never out of character and was a great mover and vocalist.

I was exhausted just watching the ensemble. Choreography by Amie Rutherford was so demanding but the end result was exceptional. Costumes and set captured the atmosphere of the 60’s and helped to create a real “feel good” atmosphere.  Howard Raw, Director, Jim Thomas, Musical Director and Amie Rutherford, Choreographer together with all back stage crew, have combined to produce a show to remember.
