Some background information: The title of the play is an old legal term which translates as “You shall have the Body”. The play was first performed in London in 1973 with Alec Guiness in the title role. The excellent programme gave an excellent and fascinating account of the life of The Author Alan Bennett.
Now to the play itself. It was an evening of bare bosoms, trouser droppings, mixed identities, and all the elements of a sexy Whitehall farce but with the wit of Alan Bennett. The ideal play to attend on a wet miserable evening
An excellent cast with the story and linking in the capable hands of Joanne James (Mrs Swabb). She linked the characters and story together with humour and revealing facial expressions. There were 10 characters and actors listed in the programme and the standard was high and it would be most unfair to single any one of the actors out for comment.
The production maintained the high standard one expects from the Grange Players and being without their home for several months has not damaged their reputation one bit.
At the Playhouse patrons have the luxury of having their pre-ordered interval drinks delivered to them in their seats. One couple nearly did have theirs delivered in their seats. Full marks to the bar member on duty who successfully juggled two bottles of orange juice when he tripped and the tray nearly left his hands. Great amusement all round and as I promised no name quoted!!
