First Premiered on Broadway in 1950 winning a Tony Award for best musical along with a film starring Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons and Vivian Blaine. The show under the direction of Sue Sampson was sure to be a winner with her innovative ideas bringing the best out of the leading characters. Sky Masterson (Nick Williams) this very handsome leading man played the part as a gambler with great success wooing the Salvation Army Sergeant Sarah Brown (Alexandra Boughton) to succumb to his charms. When, for a bet Sky took her on a date to Cuba her drunk scene was very believable. Nathan Detroit (Martin Sampson) played the role well as a gambler trying hard to find a venue for a crap game. Miss Adelaide (Sue Prior) trying to persuade Nathan to marry after a 14 year engagement acted and sang well, her dancing with the Hat Box girls was very entertaining and well played. Arvide Abernathy (Arthur Venables) Grandfather of Sarah, beautifully sang “More I Cannot Wish You” it was a very poignent moment. General Cartwright (Judy Good) was very commanding as the boss of the Salvation Army. Big Jule (Phil Street) as the cigar smoking mob gangster was excellent. The rest of the principals and chorus gave strong support resulting in a top class show. Musical Director Richard Stockton conducted the orchestra, bringing the toe tapping music to life and giving excellent support to the cast. Dawn Stephens Graham McCarron Sue Sampson and Dance Captain Charlie Davies gave the dancers a good foundation which enhanced the show. Rick Comber assisted by Jessica Eade and their stage crew worked well to make for a very polished performance.
