The society had a lovely set and used the limited space well with good directional options on some scenes being played in front of the tabs. The costumes were lovely and the props and lighting complimented the show. There were a couple of small issues with microphones but not enough to detract from the overall show.
The Orchestra under the baton of John G Barry sounded fabulous and the work done in rehearsals clearly paid off as the cast sounded great with some wonderful harmonies.
All the supporting cast did great jobs on their characterisations and I especially liked Tony Kennedy as Harry the Horse and Duncan Anderson as Nicely Nicely Johnson who sang lead on “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat” with great tones and acting.
But the strength of this show is always the chemistry between the two couples.
Mary Doyle played really well as Miss Adelaide with a nice tone in her vocals and great accent but the believability of the character comes from her relationship with Nathan Detroit played expertly by Paul Hancox. Paul had wonderful vocals and great stage presence and sang my favourite number “Sue Me” with Miss Adelaide which sounded and was performed wonderfully well by both.
Sarah Brown was played by the experienced Susan Milligan who acted the part beautifully and sounded wonderful on her numbers. Martin Taylor in his first lead role of Sky Masterson looked and sounded great and the two of them were totally believable as a couple.
The society did a lovely job on this show and it was evident to all that they all thoroughly enjoyed being on stage. The audience had a great time and this was a smashing way to spend an evening. Well done to all concerned both onstage and backstage.
