You often read that a football match is “a game of two halves.” On this occasion Carnoustie Musical Society’s production of Guys and Dolls turned out to be a “show of two halves” for us as the night we attended the show was brought to a premature halt by a power cut which blacked out a part of Carnoustie. I must compliment the cast for their professionalism when they were in the early stages of the crap scene in the sewer and carried on the dialogue without hesitation when the lights went out but were forced to succumb when there was no power for “Luck Be a Lady.” The show was brought to an early conclusion with the presentation of seven Long Service Awards - in the near darkness!! Returning the following evening we were able to enjoy the excellent production in its entirety. In the leading roles of Sky Masterton and Sarah Brown Kevin Smith and Pam Wallace were in perfect harmony both musically and dramatically. Well done both! Laurie Smith was in top form in the testing role of Nathan Detroit and carried the part in expert style. His long-suffering fiancée Miss Adelaide was superbly performed by Joanne Fitzgerald. Her portrayal and accent were excellent at all times and her singing was outstanding. She performed “Marry the Man Today” at breakneck speed. In the smaller, but pivotal role of Arvide Abernathy, Rodger Brunton was also in great form. His sensitive and sympathetic rendition of “More I Cannot Wish You” was the most moving I have heard in my many years of conducting and attending this show. Top marks Rodger – your late entry is forgiven!! The other highlight of this show is of course “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat” and Grant Roach in the role of Nicely, Nicely Johnson, carried it off with great spirit. I liked the innovative wave effects. Add to all this good performances by the rest of the well drilled cast of crap-shooters Salvationists, Guys and dancing Dolls – company choreography in Havana and the Crapshooters. Dance - these were a most enjoyable two evenings of musical theatre. Congratulations to the production team and company!
