Guys and Dolls captures an era of Broadway quintessentially that has become a cult show that never fails to attract a cast eager to play the well drawn characters.
The set was thoughtfully designed, and the cast gave some good interpretations of their Damon Runyon characters. Chris and Karen Barker confidently played the lead roles of Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown the Save-a-Soul mission girl. I thought that their solos and duets were very good indeed especially ‘I’ve Never Been In Love Before’, at times though the Bronx / American accent was lost and northern accents came through. Nicely-Nicely Johnson and Benny Southstreet gave us moments of comedy, so well done Will Patrick and Scott McGuckin. Robbie Gaffney as Big Jule’s was very amusing. Dave Stockton played Nathan Detroit very well indeed, bringing out all the comedy required in this part fending off the advances of Miss Adelaide, to whom he has been engaged for 14 years. He had good stage presence and a fine sense of comedy, he was the ideal foil for the scatty Adelaide, very well played and sung by Hayley Dent. I really enjoyed ‘Adelaide’s Lament’, this young lady had an excellent accent and was perfect in this part. Matthew Barker as Brother Abernathy gave a truthful rendering of ‘More I Cannot Wish You’, it came across quite lovely. The guys did a good job especially in the sewer scene, and in the mission with ‘Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat’. The chorus did well and the supporting roles were well executed. The Hot-Box girls performed well, but I did think that some were a little young, saying that they were obviously enjoying themselves. ‘Sue Me’ and ‘Luck be a Lady’ were also well received. Overall the cast appeared to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, the choreography was good and I did enjoy ‘Take Back Your Mink’. Well done girls.
Lighting, sound and orchestra all added to the evening’s entertainment. Thank you for the chocolates!
