Based on short stories written by Damon Runyon around the 1920/30s, Guys and Dolls has remained a popular show since it premiered on Broadway in 1950. With this the first production presented under the Society’s new name following their golden jubilee year, they certainly brought downtown New York to Motherwell with great performances from the Crapshooters, Hot Box Girls, Mission Band and the Guys and Dolls bringing this musical fable to life. Chris Morris provided an impressive first rate performance as the gambler Sky Masterson in seeking the favour of the suitably naive Sarah Brown, capably played by Louise Barry. Scott Thomson and Catherine Paterson bounced off each other extremely well providing great amusement as Nathan Detroit and his long suffering fiancée Miss Adelaide. Edward Pearson Snr. was just right as Arvide Abernathy as was Marie Maxwell in the part of General Cartwright. Strong performances were also provided by Chris Costello (Nicely-Nicely), Robert Kirkham (Benny), John McKenzie (Big Jule), John Kelly (Harry) and the other gamblers, bringing out the humour at the Crap Game and again in the Mission with the entire company for ‘Sit Down, You’re Rocking The Boat’. All in all, I am sure many souls were saved! Well done to all concerned for this well cast and directed production.
