Great credit to the production team for presenting such a high quality show that brought Frank Loesser`s music to the fore.
The opening took us to the drab streets of New York and the harmonious singing of “The Fugue for Tinhorns”, enlivened by the New Yorkers, the Missionists, and of course the Gamblers. Throughout there was good use made of the stage and scene changes were speedy.
Firstly the guys, Billy Sweet was brilliant as Nathan Detroit, he has such a natural stage presence with a larger than life performance that belies his youthful age. Sky Masterson was well played by Ryan Phelps, his acting and singing were spot on. I loved the understated interpretation that Robert McAuley brought to the character of Nicely-Nicely Johnson and his singing of “Sit Down, Your Rockin the Boat”, with the chorus staging, was a definite highlight. The Gamblers included the impressive Isasc Brooks as big Jule, Oliver Ridgway as Harry The Horse, Aiden Carson as Benny Southstreet, and they were all terrific, and along with the rest of the guys contributed to a well-choreographed “Luck Be a Lady”.
Now to the Dolls. Abi Parker was exquisite as Sarah Brown, and what a beautiful singing voice, along with natural acting ability, she surely has a bright future ahead. Ezzy Parker was stunning as Miss Adelaide, her singing, dancing and comic timing top drawer.
Supporting roles of Abernathy, played by Billy Stewart, General Cartwright, by Sammy Platkiw, and Kian Booth as Lt. Brannigan, along with the Hot Box Girls and the Mission girls, all added to make this a fun and well created show.
With a good band, effective minimal set, and excellent lighting, a good evening was had by all.
