Pratchett's signature humour and wit shine through, providing a lively and entertaining stage adaptation that captivates audiences with its fantastical charm and clever satire.
Delivering a spirited take on "Guards! Guards! Guards!" Monifieth Amateur Dramatics took on the monumental task of bringing this whimsical and fantastical world to life. The production exuded an infectious energy, despite its limitations, delivering a commendable performance that delighted the audience. One of the notable aspects of this adaptation was the enthusiasm and dedication of the cast. Issac Devereux's portrayal of Captain Vimes, Geode Partridge as Carrot, Euan Smith as Lupine Wonce and Steven Armstrong's Sergeant Colon were noteworthy. Ann Sutherland's The Patrician was particularly impressive, seamlessly fitting into the role. The Company’s passion for the story and characters was palpable on stage, namely the young Brothers. Each member of the ensemble showcased their commitment, striving to embody the unique personalities crafted by Pratchett.
The set design, while modest, cleverly utilised minimal resources to evoke the bustling and chaotic city of Ankh-Morpork. The creative team's resourcefulness was commendable, effectively transporting the audience to the vivid world described in Pratchett's novel. Admittedly, the production encountered some technical hiccups - a few missed cues and set issues disrupted the flow of the performance. Yet, the cast's ability to adapt and maintain the momentum of the story despite these challenges was praiseworthy. The adaptation managed to capture the essence of Pratchett's humour and satire, generating genuine laughs from the audience. While some nuances of the intricate plot might have been lost in translation, the overall narrative remained engaging and entertaining. The strength of this production lay in its heartfelt portrayal of the characters and the evident camaraderie among the cast. This was a commendable effort that showcased the power of community theatre and its ability to bring beloved stories to life.
