Grimm Tales

As the curtains opened it became obvious that this was going to be another outstanding production from The Dilys Guite Players. Although the stage is confined to a small area, in the hands of technical experts it was amazing and would not have looked out of place on any professional stage. The digital backdrops (Chris Webb), lighting (Harry Rowbotham), sound and music (Duncan Parsons) and the set building team all worked brilliantly together.  Likewise, the direction and performance from the actors.

Nick Tait’s adaptation was excellent and follows the well known and not-so-well known stories written by the Grimm brothers. However, Nick gave them a different slant and with a brilliant twist some were quite eerie. The six talented actors were Steve Eddison, Lindsey Ladhams, Paul Voodini, Matt Hutchinson, Liz Lynch-Smith and Michael Staples. They were excellent and took on numerous roles - the human characters as well as the narrators, animals, evil ones, witches, robbers and murderers. All of course required many costume changes and accents to suit the characters being portrayed. Along with skilful movement of the furniture as and when required everything went smoothly.

A lot of thought, many rehearsals and hard work have gone into making this a superb production of Grimm Tales. The directors, Kevin Jackson and Harry Rowbotham and the assistant director Nick Tait were first-class and  ensured that the characters were well defined, and the cast used the stage, set and props to full advantage. A most enjoyable performance, mixed with laughter followed by fear and enhanced by a wonderful team both on and back-stage
