Johnstone Phoenix Youth Theatre once again proved why they are such a joy to watch. Their production of Grease: Young@Part was vibrant, engaging, and a clear celebration of the talent and dedication of their young performers.

From the outset, the production was filled with energy and enthusiasm, drawing the audience into the world of Rydell High. The cast demonstrated a strong sense of teamwork, with a lively ensemble that maintained momentum throughout and delivered choreography with confidence and precision.

In the leading roles, Noah McSkimming brought charisma and assurance to Danny, while Emma McCulloch gave a warm and engaging portrayal of Sandy. Both performers displayed strong vocals and natural stage presence, creating an effective partnership at the heart of the show.

The supporting principals made equally valuable contributions. Mason Mkangama delivered a confident and well-rounded Kenickie, and Mirin Mushet’s Rizzo stood out as a particularly assured performance, full of character and conviction. Emma Lochrie brought charm and individuality to Frenchy, while Max Adams, as Doody, demonstrated confidence and clear characterisation. Giacomo Sassi’s Sonny added great energy, and Grace Todd gave a polished performance as Marty. Jack Haldane, as Roger, performed with enthusiasm and commitment, contributing well to the overall balance of the group. Jeorgie Allison, in the role of Jan, brought out the character’s comedy with lovely timing and a natural sense of fun, adding warmth and humour to the ensemble. Sonny Ferguson brought entertainment value to Vince Fontaine, particularly through strong vocal delivery and excellent stage presence. Aimee McIver, taking on her first big part as Patty Simcox, did very well and brought lovely stage presence to the role.

The ensemble work was a true strength of the production. With a large cast, the company maintained a high level of energy, and the choreography was executed to a commendable standard. Movement and staging were well-handled, ensuring the stage picture remained dynamic and engaging.  Vocals were consistently strong, with well-executed harmonies from the outset. Direction and staging were equally effective, and the use of digital projection, scenery, and props enhanced the overall quality of the production.

Credit must go to the production team, Craig, Cat, and Amy assisted by Amelia McDonald and Lucia Mayne for their continued commitment to nurturing young talent. Their guidance clearly enabled each performer to shine and contribute meaningfully to the production. The high standard achieved reflects both the dedication of the young cast and the support provided behind the scenes.

Overall, this was an enjoyable and uplifting production, showcasing the enthusiasm, skill, and potential of Johnstone Phoenix Youth Theatre. It is always a pleasure to see the work they bring to the stage, and this production was no exception. It is fair to say that the future of Johnstone Phoenix Theatre is safe with the standard of performers who make up this fabulous Youth Theatre group.
