“Grease” still retains the popularity as a “feel good” musical, judging by the near capacity audience at The Grand and it still holds its appeal for all age groups. Although the stage version varies from the film with more songs and a slightly different script, this iconic musical set in the 1950s goes from strength to strength.  The curtains opened and the spotlight fell on Sandy and Danny who sang a beautiful duet and we knew we were to enjoy a high- class performance. The ensemble immediately followed with an exuberant and meticulous routine with excellent vocals and a determined and positive energy, which was to continue throughout the show.

Musical Directors Jim and Dave Thomas and Nikita Coulon, Chorus Mistress had obviously worked tirelessly to achieve the high standard of performance. The eight- piece orchestra under the direction of Dave Thomas supported the performers with just the correct balance, never overpowering the vocals. Howard Raw, had obviously used all his experience as both an Actor and Director to bring out the best from all on stage and Amy Appleton’s choreography was excellent, with her interpretation of the dances of the 50’s. The sets were simple yet effective with good lighting and sound. Costumes, props and hairstyles were very authentic and brought back very happy memories for me.

Danny Zuko, Reece Oliver gave a confident, polished performance and is an excellent dancer. Jenny Strachan as Sandy Dumbrowski played her role with sensitivity together with lovely vocals. This was inspired casting. Nikita Coulon, Betty Rizzo gave a very good characterization and she had a great rapport with the talented Harry McLafferty as Kenickie.  Sarah McFadyen as Patty Simcox showed all her versatility and was obviously relishing this “over the top” character. The Pink Ladies and T. Birds all worked well together and they are to be congratulated on their ensemble work.   Cameo roles, Vince Fontaine, Mark Chapman, Cha Cha Digregorio, Lisa Beardsall, Teen Angel, Derek Winward and Miss Lynch, Shelley Crich all added their own inimitable styles to the show.

Gary Chapman, Stage Manager and his crew, were responsible for the smooth running of the production with effortless scene changes and helped to keep the pace at just the right tempo. This was yet another memorable evening by this very talented company.  Thank you for your hospitality, I look forward to your next production.
