Grease is the Word and it certainly was in Rotherham this week when RTSA performed this well known musical. The main focus of this show is of course the dancing and every youngster on the stage, as well as a couple of “not so youngsters”, pulled out all the stops to give this show the excitement and exuberance it deserved.

Of course it is not just a show with dance, there are also some very well known musical numbers in this piece and again the principals and chorus alike made sure this was a very memorable experience.

In the lead roles as Danny and Sandy we had Brad Ryan and Chloe Jackson both of whom were able to make these parts their own, I particularly enjoyed their rendition of You’re the one that I Want which comes at the end of the show, both Brad and Chloe not only sang this number but also performed it much to the delight of the audience. Of course this is not the only number they are involved in and Brad was also able to show off his talents in his song, Sandy which was pure enjoyment. Chloe was also able to show off her talents in her song, Hopelessly Devoted to You, it was evident the entire audience loved this and she was taken to the hearts of everyone present.

I enjoyed the Greased Lightening number performed by Ken Ickie, Josh Roberts and The Burger Boys, namely Will Leggetter, Dan Fenwick, Marcus Bagley-Hodkin and Kiran Richards, all these young men played their parts to the full and were able to get everything out of them. It is also worth mentioning Dan Fenwick and Marcus Bagley-Hodkin’s number Rock and Roll Party Queen; this was perfect in every way. Of course the Burger Boys also had their love interests in the guise of The Pink Ladies played by Beth Atkin, Emily Wallbank, who was able to maintain a brilliant accent all the way through, Georgia Collins,  Ciara Stothard and Millie Ducker, again these young ladies were able to display their talents much to the delight of the audience, joining these girls we also had Jade Ellis who as well as being part of the ensemble also performed as Cha-Cha in the High School Hop.

I mentioned earlier the “not so youngsters” who joined all the youngster on stage to complete the cast line up, these were Helen Garner as Miss Lynch, who was also able to strut her stuff in the High School Hop, Ashley Booker as a very dashing Vince Fontaine who sang Born to Hand Jive and Jake Simpson who had all the ladies swooning, and I think maybe some of the men too, when he sang Beauty School Dropout with a bevy of Angels and some great Cupids played by the Elementary School performers, all these three were able to complement the rest of the cast with ease.

If I was to make one criticism of this show it was some of the lines were a little lost when the other performers were making their “asides” to their fellow actors on stage while the main dialogue was taking place, just a small criticism but one which I think is quite important. This aside this was a very entertaining show which was a delight to watch.

Congratulations to all involved in the great show.
