Grease is a popular musical especially with kids and adults of a certain age. It a show that lends itself fairly well to a younger cast although there are some references that could be considered risqué.
Coventry YOG always put on a polished and energetic performance with every cast member giving their all. The enthusiasm is visible from the principals right down to the youngest cast members that appear for the bigger company numbers.
Danny and Sandy (Joe Capar and Jessie Heard) are a joy to watch, both perform solos that fill the theatre and raise the roof. Emma Davies as Rizzo also gives an outstanding performance being the tough cookie with a heart. All of the T-Birds, Pink Ladies and outsiders Patty and Eugene brought their characters personalities to life excellently; each was defined and constant throughout the show. An interesting link between scenes was provided by Vince Fontaine (Nathan Routledge) and Miss Lynch (Alana Ruddy)who both left a smile on the audiences’ faces.
The whole company numbers were literally stage fillers, to get everyone on stage and still dance is a challenge. Even in these complex routines everyone was moving as one, we go together was jaw dropping. Another stand out moment was Beauty School dropout, with Routledge being the teen idol and leading the company (in homemade space age curlers) in a dream scene.
The entire production was polished and colourful with a great set and lovely costumes. Once again an outstanding show.
