Debut Youth Theatre
What a show this was! Grease this iconic musical which everyone can sing along and enjoy is a Romeo and Juliet style story with a happy ending. Debut Youth Theatre, a vibrant company, bounced onto the stage with a passion throughout the whole show. This, following their superb performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat last year which won my Youth Award meant they had to work hard to maintain the high standard set by that show. They certainly did it justice!
All the cast in this show were good, having super vocals and characterisations. It is almost unfair to single out individuals but the two leads Danny and Sandy (Conor Chambers and Chloe Jarvis) sang very well and were well matched right through following the students meeting up at the start of a new term at Rydell High right through to the finale. Danny is unsure how his friends will take his friendship with the new girl; they are after all the ultra cool T-Birds. Sandy, delighted to see him again tried hard to fit in with the Pink Ladies.
From the opening right through to the closing number, We go Together, it was sheer bliss to see and hear this group of talented young people both entertaining the audience and also enjoying themselves at the same time resulting in a well deserved standing ovation.
Rachael Thorpe had a tight-knit band who gave the music enthusiasm, but never encroached on the cast – so although you were aware of the fantastic sound it all blended well. Rachael seems to lift everyone with her zest for the feel of the music, and this really showed.
Wendy South, Director, was well supported by Anita Pritchard, Choreographer, kept the action flowing with never a dull moment. A word for Jason Sly, Stage Manager. Together with his crew, they made sure that the show flowed on what is not an easy stage area to work with plus well done to all the background support members.
The sheer energy and enthusiasm of the cast, aligned with excellent musicality, choreography and costumes, made this a purely pleasurable evening’s entertainment.
