One thing is for certain with a Youth Theatre Group that there will be no cruising through a matinee and with the help of a large and enthusiastic audience this was to be no exception. The informative programme filled everyone in with who was who and what to expect and the cast hit the audience with some powerful singing as the curtain rose. The Dave D Events set was well worked and gave the director plenty of opportunities for good pictures and eye-catching routines. The space was well used by the energetic cast climbing the stairs with speed and executing routines all over the place. This was well lit with some wonderful effects – it’s always great to hear an audience’s surprised intake of breath. Technical issues at the beginning of Act Two were quickly resolved and otherwise sound was efficient providing a good balance between pit & stage. On the whole articulation was good – it must always be remembered that mics are no replacement for consonants. Dressed well, the cast looked the period and wore the frocks well. This can be such a problem with skirts not being so popular these days, but there was no fidgeting with frocks and everyone appeared perfectly “at home” in their outfits. The co-ordination of the wardrobe was good enhancing characters and re-inforcing period and settings.
Scene changes were operated with the usual efficiency without un-necessary haste – so why all the blackouts? Audiences are used to seeing a set change for what it is and accepting of crew appearing. The monotonous repetition of shadowy figures moving in the shade while bars were endlessly repeated did cause some fidgeting in the audience and halted the otherwise energetic flow of the production. The set was surely designed to be moved within the score’s limitations, and imaginative direction could have provided mini scenes using the large company to cover. It would have aided the general flow of the production and given the company extra to do. Accompaniment was given by an excellent seven piece band. The sound of the era was captured with some fine keyboard and sax solos well supported by a reliable rhythm section. As commented above, balance was good and the colours of the scoring were clearly stated. There was a sense of fun from the pit which perfectly matched the enjoyment on stage. Singing was good throughout with some stunning solo work. It was pleasing not to hear the voices being forced but the obvious natural talents of the members being used to their best advantage. There was a pleasing sound throughout making the most of the well-loved melodies and supporting some effective harmonies.
Direction & Choreography was strong and beautifully conceived. The talents of the members were carefully considered and supported by well prepared presentation. The whole company came across as confident and relaxed. This can only be achieved by a Director who gives clear direction and natural encouragement. Cast members knew what they were doing, when to do it and how to do it: evidence of relevant rehearsals and trust in leadership.
Not the easiest script to communicate with its short vignettes and sparce dialogue, this team had everything covered. Lines had been thought out and rehearsed and characterisations were strong. This gave clarity to every scene and the various characters’ stories were interesting and well told. There were no insignificant side-stories here but everybody’s relationships were effectively handled. This ensured that there were no small parts but that everyone in the Rydall Yearbook was interesting. This energetic and enthusiastic presentation was just what was required for this well-loved show. The well rehearsed routines and clarity of dialogue produced a lively and captivating show. The hard-working cast were well supported by the other departments allowing the natural and infectious talents of the members to shine through. The concept was well worked by all involved and clearly well led by excellent directors. A most enjoyable afternoon was enthusiastically received.
