This show was automatic… okay, you get the idea. This production of Grease by Bawtry Phoenix Theatre Young Players was full of energy from the word go. A great evenings entertainment and the young casts enthusiasm was a joy to watch.
Due to the vast membership, the principal roles were shared between ‘Team Grease’ and ‘Team Lightening’. On the night I attended I saw Team Grease action, and what a ten they were.
Leo Cotton played the charming and dashing Danny Zuko. Leo was confident and provided the audience with some great vocals. Leo was paired with Alice Frogson as Sandy. Alice was everything we expect from this famous character. She had obviously studied the legendary performance from Olivia Newton-John as she she was excellent as both the naive Sandy and the super confident Sandy after the transformation.
Briony Dale (Jan) Lana Bailey(Marta) and Frenchy were great on their interpretations as the original girl group, the pink ladies. Their interpretations were spot on. Sophia as Frenchy being a particular stand out.
The T Birds were simply amazing and the boys looked like they were having the time of their life. Oliver Wood as Doody was hysterically funny and his song ‘Those Magic Changes’ was a particular highlight. The rest of the T Birds were Thomas Wood (Kenickie) Will Tempest (Sonny) and James Bilby (Roger) and I’m sure these talented young men will be in much demand in the coming years.
Grace Castle, played the leader of the pink Ladies, Rizzo. Grace was perfectly cast and oozed attitude and sass every time she was on stage. There wasn’t a dry eye in the theatre at her beautiful and emotional rendition of ‘There are worse things I could do.’
I must mention the excellent portrayal of Patty by Iris Bagihole. Iris was simply stunning and delivered a comedy masterclass. Not only was her acting first rate, but Iris also managed to cartwheel her away across the stage and deliver amazing splits.
The major principals were well supported by Levi Moyes ( Eugene) Kayleigh Dunn (Miss Lynch) Olivia Morgan (Cha Cha) Eloise Firth ( a fabulous Vince Vontaine) Harrison Smith (Teen Angel) Alex Anderson ( Johnny Casino) and Eliza Simpson ( Miss Lynch). The ensemble were also played their part well and provides some great harmonies.
Costumes and hair styles were in keeping with the period. Congratulations to all the cast, crew and production team. Grease was most certainly the word!
