Well known music, familiar plot, fifties style tempo - a recipe for success. The cast sang and danced its way into the hearts of the audience. Added to that, spectacular sets and a wonderful car created a special backdrop for the whole. Good wigs, costumes and makeup took us all nostalgically back to the late Fifties where Ian Davidson strutted his stuff as Danny Zuko, Stephanie Di Placido exuded innocence in Sandra Dee making the later transformation all the more striking and Lisa Goldie gave us a raunchy Rizzo and a moving rendition of ‘There Are Worse Things I Could Do’ that earned well deserved applause. The Pink Ladies also included Joyce Gallacher as spunky Frenchy, Katie Gardiner as a worldly-wise Marty and Shelley Procek as sensible Jan. Meanwhile the T Bird boys not to be outdone brought out the mannerisms, movements and attitudes of the era - enthusiastic Kenickie, ‘basic’ guitar player Doody, Roger and Sonny, namely Maurice Pryke, Michael Coyne, Darren Jalland and Darren Tasker - especially in the drooling over the car and the boys’ camaraderie. Likewise Matthew Knowles as Eugene and Marianne Herron as Patty gave good supporting performances. David Young and Janice Gray made the most of their adult roles of womaniser Vince Fontaine and teacher Miss Lynch. One of the special moments out of many was the staging of the ‘Beauty School Dropout’ scene and its singing by Kenny Walker as Teen Angel. It was good to have the band above at the rear of the stage working together with the principals and cast to create a great sound. Everyone looked as if they were having a ball and they made their audience have one too. Congratulations.
