Goldilocks and the Three Bears is fast becoming a regular pantomime being performed by societies, instead of the usual traditional pantomimes.
Annabel Clarke did a good job of making sure the traditions of pantomime were there along with a few new twists to those traditions.
Chelsea Clarke’s choreography was nothing short of outstanding, it was challenging yet obviously well-rehearsed. Not one move was out of place and each number had a different range of steps, everyone handled them well. Congratulations Chelsea, the dancing was exceptional.
Tom Nicol and his band were fantastic and balanced well with the actors, with the odd ad lib to add to the comedy.
Ylana Schafer-Thomson (Goldilocks) had the presence of a good principal girl and a stunning voice, it was faultless in every number that she sung. Potentially, there was one to many songs especially in act one, I could feel the children around me getting a little restless during some of the numbers.
Edwin portrayed by Lewis Clarke was the principal bo. Everything he did was handled well. It is unusual to see this character in pantomimes handling the slapstick comedy routines, but Lewis did, and he handled them well.
Josh Clarke played Joey. Josh is one of the best slapstick comedy performers I have the privilege of seeing, everything is timed well. There was a lot of slapstick in this pantomime, one of my favourite routines was the song on the bridge, with Edwin and Goldilocks.
Peter Wright played the Dame who was named Gertie. Peter plays the dame how it should be played, a man playing a woman not a man trying to be a woman. Very quick with the one liners and good audience work.
Juggle and ball were played by Jordan and Noah Clarke. As a partnership these two performers know each other so well that they bounce off each other and work together so well. The routine in UV was brilliant very clever and innovative.
Jordan Rosie King played Candy, lovely voice, good sidekick for Goldilocks and Joey.
Fairy Fortune was played by Corina Foley. The idea of the fairy being a fortune teller is a wonderful idea, however at times Corina did rush her lines and that made it difficult to always understand her. De Ville was expertly played by Carly Bays, super costume and great evil personality.
The Three Bears Winne (Emma Cole), Fuzzy (Emily Hunter) and Teddy (Siobhan Keppler) were great, their characters were well thought out each one being different, the use of their face expressions as well really enhanced characters – well done.
Vinklebottom (Alan Reilly) played father in the pantomime well, this is usually a part that does not get mentioned as much but he has some lovely lines that he delivered well. Nuts the Elephant was outstanding, I always enjoy a good animal in a pantomime and Nuts was great, and the water joke expertly done.
Sound was perfect, not one mistake, well done Will.
Whenever I come to watch SPADS I always must remind myself that all the sets are built by the society for every show, this was no exception and yet again great.
Yet another successful pantomime, with a well written script, thank you to the front of house team for their hospitality.
