IYFT Seaham are never afraid to take on a challenge, so when they needed a performance venue they found a sports hall and made it into a theatre! It had everything necessary to provide their audience with the theatre experience, well done, it can’t have been an easy load in or get out.
The panto Goldilocks and The Three Bears is centred on a circus and the lighting plot and backdrops certainly gave the feel of the circus to the performance area. Costumes were also bright and colourful.
The ensemble presented as the various acts of the circus and gave us a demonstration of some of their circus skills including some dodgy plate spinning, juggling, magic and snake charming, there was energy and enthusiasm from them throughout.
The principal line up worked hard keeping the pace up and involving the audience as much as possible, including giving us one or two soakings with the water pistols, the children loved it. The role of the evil Ring Master Heinkel was in the very capable hands of Nathan Vose, assured and terrifying in all the right measures. He was very ably assisted by Orie Coulton-Goodwin as Snot his sidekick, this young performer has a bright future ahead of him. Providing the good influences was Rita Watters as Mystic Sharon, appearing as if by magic in the audience, her delivery was the perfect contrast giving an aura of calm and her vocal performance was lovely. The title role of Goldilocks was played Francesca Lundie, she gave a confident performance and had good rapport with all of the other cast members. Jonathan Ryan as Goldilocks’ father Baron Wasteland portrayed a good change in characteristics when he went from mean guy to Baby Bear’s hero. The three bears played by Shaun Crosby, Irene Smith/Anne Peacock and Amelie Mae Corner made a loveable family who the children adored, Amelie was especially endearing and is a promising young performer. The comedy and slapstick plays an important part in traditional panto and Peter Baker as Silly Billy and Barry Thomas as Dame Gertie Dollop worked hard to bring out all the laughter. Peter definitely had all of the children on side judging by the shouts as he came on stage and Barry’s outfits were something else. The porridge making scene was a hoot, they got porridge everywhere except on the mat strategically placed to catch it!
Well done to the production and support team for bringing the show together especially with your time and venue restraints, you filled your theatre with laughter and Christmas joy and thank you as always for the warm welcome.
