LAMA Youth opted for the 2012-revised Broadway version of this rock gospel musical. One new song has been added to the score, unfortunately some of the more exciting orchestrations have now been omitted. That said, LAMA Youth have done everything to confirm our belief that there is an up and coming cauldron of young talent waiting to step in to the shoes of those who feel the time is right to “call it a day”!

The show is, essentially, a high speed romp in music and song through the gospel of St Matthew with a bit of Luke thrown in. It draws from a host of theatrical traditions, music hall, clowning, pantomime, mime etc.  Jesus (Callum Stott) and Judas (Connor Wright) lead the totally enthusiastic cast through the various songs and scenes of this lively show. Not mentioning each of the cast by name shows no disrespect to any of their perfomances – the very opposite is true. The company gelled together from the moment the show went up, and continued in this vein throughout. Normally in Godspell the small cast remain on stage throughout, however, here, when you have another 21 chorus members to showcase they are brought on either in front of, or behind, the fencing allowing the choral singing to be augmented without overcrowding the stage. Diction, both spoken and sung, was excellent. The set was simple. A semicircle of fencing dressed with a wide variety of multicoloured props merged well with the well-designed lighting, bringing focal points to the action in the several parables and culminating in Jesus’ crucifixion – hands up all those who forgot to keep breathing during this sequence!

Congratulations to Director and Musical Director, Iain Hughes and Peter Robinson for an excellent show, further exhibiting the immense talents of the Youth of Fife!
