There is one thing we can be assured of when attending a North Ormesby Minstrel production, and that is enthusiasm. This production of ‘Godspell’ was no exception.  This is a very young group, and their commitment and enjoyment transfers to the audience, so that even if this type of musical is not exactly ‘your thing’ you cannot help but admire the performances of everyone involved.

Based on the gospel according the St Matthew, we journey through the events leading up to the crucifixion.  Several well known parables are dramatised and the whole thing was brought into the 21st century to get the message across with references to call centres, mobile phones, computers, and several well known television adverts.

There were some lovely musical moments, notably by Karen Coates and Melissa Smith who gave a very sensitive rendition of ‘By My Side’ and Jill Stephenson’s simple but atmospheric rendition of ‘Beautiful City’.  The dance routines were vibrant and very well co-ordinated, and there were good confident performances from George Maenami as Jesus, Richard Bracknall as John the Baptist, and Gary Dring as Judas.  The six piece band was sensitive to the performers, and the members of the production team have every reason to be proud of their achievement.
