Gipsy Love is a revival of an original works by Franz Lehar set in Victorian times and tells the story of a well to do English land owner’s daughter who is betrothed to the county’s Lord Lieutenant’s son but she appears to be romantically involved with a gipsy rogue whose family live on the land.
Adrian Peakman is particularly convincing as landowner Sir Peregrine Plomley with some excellent comic delivery.
Sheila Smith was in fine form as Miranda his daughter torn between her husband to be "Lawrence" and "Antonio" the relentless gipsy rogue.
Julian Souter also performed well as “Lord Lyell” and as many other characters throughout the show! John Sheard gave another assured performance as “Antonio” as did Beth Berwick-Lowe as “Lucinda” Sir Peregrine’s younger daughter who desperately tries to persuade her love “Oswald” to speak to her father!!
Other good performances came from Anne Woolley as “Lady Phoebe”, Geoff Silk as the innocent “Lawrence Lyell”, and Sam Deakin as Lucinda’s reluctant boyfriend “Oswald”. Good supporting roles from Mac Hammond Sir Peregrine’s Valet “Pringle”, Barbara Smith as “Ria” Queen of the Gipsies, Jane Butler as “Dilaia”, Janet Clough as “Kathy” and John Belcher as the “Inn Keeper”.
Tettenhall Operatic did very well in overcoming some sizeable restrictions imposed by their new studio theatre venue particularly in housing a large orchestra on the stage. This also had a significant bearing on having to use some simpler choreography and having to use a simple and plain stage set.
There were some first night jitters with a few lines being missed and delayed cues for the cast to enter some of the scenes.
The 14 piece orchestra lead by Peter Smith was a delight and showcased some delightful songs throughout the show, although they did at times overpower some of the dialogue.
That said, it was a good night’s entertainment enjoyed by virtually a capacity audience.
