I didn't know what to expect from this play - I had various possible scenarios in my head , none of which proved to be correct!
The story centres around the character of Edward, a writer, who, after the death of his wife is suffering from writer's block and, as the action begins, has sunk to the depths of despair despite the friendship and encouragement of his landlord, Alex. Strange happenings occur which culminate in the reappearance of his wife, intent on uncovering a murderer. As with all good whodunnits the plot is pursued to its denouement when fresh hope dawns for Edward.
The role of Edward was taken by Jim Howson, who gave an assured, well balanced performance as the despairing writer, with Mark Lewin making a solid debut as Alex. Amanda Howson made a suitably ghostly appearance as the wife, Ruby, returning to see that right is done. The rest of the cast, Emma Wilberforce (Glenda), Toni Glover (Frances) and Keith Fraser (Hedley) contributed well to the overall performance and there was a large enough cast of characters to keep the audience involved with pondering who could have 'dunnit'.
The set, lighting, effects and mood music added positively to the evening's entertainment with a good team both front of house and backstage ensuring that the audience was welcomed and that the play ran smoothly and at a good pace.
There were probably just a few too many prompts necessary but I feel that, on the whole, the audience was really involved with the action on stage and had a very enjoyable evening.
It was great to see some new faces on stage - new actors are a lifeline to amateur companies!
Thank you for your friendly welcome and for an intriguing evening. I look forward to seeing you all again.
